Key Elements of an Employee Evaluation Form:
An ideal employee evaluation form has to have clear and achievable goals and objectives. When the management sets easily achievable goals for the employees, it’s easy to increase the performance because employees can clearly see that the defined goals are easy to achieve. On the other hand, if set goals are difficult or complex, it can create lack of motivation or interest in the job because employees would they can’t get to the point that is expected by their management.
Performance evaluation should be periodic:
Most companies use employee evaluation form once a year usually before increments or promotions but the majority of multinational companies understand that when it comes to performance appraisal, it has to be done more than once a year. We are not asking you to evaluate your employees’ performance each month but it should be done after each big project so if there was lack of performance, it can be eliminated in the next big project.
Employee feedback is a must:
An employee evaluation form is considered incomplete if it doesn’t include any feedback from the employees. Employees should be given the chance to talk freely about their work environment, performance of their coworkers and team members, company policies and the opportunities to grow on a bigger scale within the company. When these and other questions are answered by various employees in different departments, management can deeply understand what’s causing a problem and how to overcome it to enhance employee performance.
Standards should be same for all employees:
Although it would create some difficulties to analyze performance of employees in different departments and various designations with different responsibilities and duties but on the long run, having an evaluation system that applies equally to all employees within an organization can benefit better. This way all the employees are evaluated on the same level regardless of the fact that some of them are senior management members and some of them are junior employees.
There should be self evaluation:
Although it’s a fact that if you directly ask someone about their weaknesses, they wouldn’t feel comfortable discussing it with you but an employee evaluation form should be made with a section where the employees is asked to evaluate himself. This is the part where the employees are asked to write about their strengths, weaknesses and areas of their responsibilities that they understand can be or must be improved. Managers and supervisors understand their subordinates better but nothing beat the fact that employees should be given the chance to talk about their performance without the threat of putting their job at risk.
