Free Competitive Analysis Templates

Competitive analysis templates serve as strategic tools which enable businesses to evaluate their competitors and determine positioning strategies within the market. They provide a systematic way of collecting and juxtaposing various kinds of critical data like strengths and weaknesses of the master of the field, market share, pricing policy, and clients’ attitudes. Breaking it all down with competitive analysis templates helps business in locating voids, estimates and threats more accurately.

Thinking about launching a new product, entering a busy market, or just striving to maintain your competitive edge? There is no way to do so if you do not have c]any competitive analysis to rely on. Competitive analysis is not contained in data collection and the interpretation of data as information. Typical templates even always end at this point by simply providing a step in time picture of the current strategies in place.

Understanding the Core of Competitive Analysis

Competitive analysis is a basic element of developing any strategic plan that is worth its salt. Competitive analysis templates are a systematic way of comprehending your competitors. It is not just important to know one’s rival, but what makes them tick. There are many templates around, the majority of which use the competence gap (also referred to as SWOT, which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats) as their basis. By contrast, SWOT is rather a static form of explanation that has no element of how the competition takes place. The purpose of an effective template is not to draw up commendable records but to discuss the implications of the information. There are specific templates that can be developed for different companies depending on their sector and some of their particular goals. In this case, let’s consider the most common types of templates available and describe their possible applications.

    Introducing Strategic Horizon Mapping (SHM)

Strategic Horizon Mapping (SHM) is a dynamic framework that moves beyond static competitor analysis by forecasting potential responses to your strategic initiatives, enabling proactive strategic planning and resilience.

SHM is a methodology designed to move beyond simply understanding what your competitors are doing to predicting how they’ll react. It’s based on the understanding that competition isn’t just a fight for market share; it’s a constant dance of anticipation and response. Traditional SWOT analysis identifies competitor weaknesses, but SHM digs deeper by considering the likelihood of those weaknesses being exploited and the consequences of your actions.

    The SHM Process:

    • Identify Key Strategic Initiatives: Define your planned moves – product launches, marketing campaigns, pricing adjustments, etc.
    • Map Potential Competitor Responses: For each initiative, brainstorm a range of potential responses from your competitors. Don’t just focus on the obvious. Ask “What’s their most likely response?” and “What’s a ‘dark horse’ response – something unexpected that could completely derail your plans?”
    • Assess Response Likelihood & Impact: Rate each potential response based on its likelihood (probability of occurring) and its potential impact (severity of the consequences if it happens). Use a scale – e.g., Low, Medium, High.
    • Develop Contingency Plans: For each high-likelihood/high-impact scenario, develop specific contingency plans – alternative strategies to mitigate the risk.

Example: Let’s say you’re launching a new premium product. A typical SWOT analysis might highlight a competitor’s lower price point. SHM would go further: “Likely Response: Competitor launches a ‘value pack’ offering at a slightly reduced price. Likelihood: High. Impact: Moderate – erosion of profit margins.” A contingency plan might be to accelerate a loyalty program to retain existing customers.
